Suitability:

While Harley likes to remain fairly ambivalent when it comes to politics and history has shown that politicians can’t be trusted with the likes of Waller and Silvio and that whole faction of disappointment that followed, Harley Quinn is absolutely not an island. Sure, she loves petty theft, a life of crime, and the wild spontenaity that goes along with living authentically, but she’s abhorrently against the types of people that love to dictate and subjugate.

Bucking the system is what she’s good at! She loves a good fight and would definitely fight for the people she cared about as well as the little people, and her home, and effectively that’s what she’ll be dealing with. She’s been displaced enough in her life, and won’t appreciate any kind of security being pulled out from under her. Kicking ass is also a fantastic way to blow off steam, and counts as a work out, for the record.

So, where the interpersonal dynamics of the politics won’t be something she’ll participate in like the tactics meant to slow distribution, resources, and things like tariffs and taxation she’ll absolutely participate in any kind of physical conflict or things that require immediate action on the part of the people. That’s not to say she doesn’t understand intellectual warfare, just that she doesn’t want to participate in it outside of being just a casually informed observer.

Powers:

Master Combatant: Harley Quinn is a highly skilled and formidable armed and hand-to-hand combatant. Although she has no formal training in hand-to-hand combat, it could be due to her years of fighting by Joker's side. When in a fight, Harley uses her acrobatic skills to best her opponents. Harley was able to seriously injure five Belle Reve guards before finally being restrained in an extra-secure cell. She also quickly overpowered two far larger Eyes of the Adversary troops of Enchantress in rapid succession with nothing but her agility, combat skills and baseball bat. However, she was swiftly defeated by Batman, with the latter knocking her out with a single mighty punch, and by Enchantress in their final battle. She was able to fight Renee Montoya, an experienced hand-to-hand fighter in her own right. When raiding the GCPD, she was able to take down numerous trained police officers and other criminals in lockup with a combination of acrobatic kicks, swings from her bat, and the use of her custom-made non-lethal grenade launcher. When at the abandoned amusement park, she was able to take out most of Black Mask's thugs singlehandedly while in roller skates.

Stick Mastery: Harley is dangerously skilled with bludgeoning weapons like her mallet and baseball bat. Most notably, she used her baseball bat to take down multiple Eyes of the Adversary and even landed a hit on the Enchantress (though it failed to faze her). When escaping a gang of bounty hunters, she was able to take down a number of them using a baseball bat found in evidence. Later, while fighting Black Mask's criminal organization, Harley utilized a mallet to take many of them down. Harley was also able to effectively utilize her Fun Gun in much the same way to her baseball bat, using it to block blows and using it as a blunt weapon.

Knife Proficiency: Harley is skilled at using knives. Using a karambit against Batman while underwater, she attempted to use a razor against guards, and even using a tranq dart to repeatedly stab Victor Zasz. She is also a skilled knife-thrower, based on the knives in the target shaped like Joker's face.

Master Acrobat: Harley Quinn, as a former gymnast, is shown to be highly skilled in various acrobatics, including pole dancing and other agile maneuvers, often incorporating agile moves while fighting opponents, notably able to flip over one monstrous Eye of the Adversary when the managed to get a hold of her (thus twisting herself out of his grasp) and to easily dodge slashes from Enchantress' daggers. After falling out of Joker's helicopter, she broke her fall and effortlessly rolled it off. When raiding the GCPD, she was able to evade attacks from the police officers and other prisoners using a variety of cartwheels and handsprings, as when Renee Montoya had Harley at gunpoint and Harley was able to flip kick the phone she was holding into her face knocking her unconscious. When being tailed by Black Mask she was able to perform a back handspring onto the top of his vehicle to avoid being run down. Harley's athleticism paid off in dividends during her brief career in roller derby.

Expert Markswoman: Harley Quinn, while not nearly on par with Deadshot, is nonetheless a highly skilled markswoman, landing several headshots on some of Enchantress' monstrous Eyes of the Adversary troops, even while performing acrobatic maneuvers. When raiding the GCPD, she was able to shoot several officers in their center mass, as well as some in the face and even one from behind with her Fun Gun. She used Renee Montoya's revolver to shoot a statue (which she believed to be Black Mask) in the head.

Gifted Intelligence: Harley Quinn is exceptionally intelligent, having been an excellent academic achiever in high school, which earned her a full scholarship to the prestigious Gotham State University, where she would go on to write a very successful graduate thesis. Harley's intellect extends itself to her psychological, tactical, and deception skills.

Expert Psychiatrist: Harley Quinn, while still Harleen Quinzel, was a highly skilled psychologist, majoring in psychiatry at Gotham State University, with her psychology graduate thesis being a huge success, and allowing her the opportunity to work as a psychologist at the infamous Arkham Asylum itself. Even after being rendered psychopathic by the Joker, Harley shows at least traces of her psychologist expertise, being able to make swift breakdowns of the psychological profiles of El Diablo, Killer Croc, and Katana, knowing exactly what to say in order to get under their skin (criticizing El Diablo for ever thinking he could have a normal life with his powers and for not taking responsibility for the death of his children, judging Killer Croc's exterior aesthetic in addition to his interior and intuiting his need to eat people combined with his hatred for mankind and viewing the world as a sewer, and diagnosing Katana with deep-seated father issues). Hence, she even proudly proclaims to Rick Flag that she is known to be "quite vexing," and later unofficially diagnosed Deadshot as "another textbook sociopath." After her emancipation, she pointed out Black Mask as having a delicate sense of mental equilibrium (which she agitates) and an obsessive-compulsive need to be the center of attention and understood that he built a criminal empire in a "very misguided" attempt to win back the respect of his father after the latter kicked him out of Janus Corp. She later noted Huntress for her childhood trauma and spoke to her on the topic of revenge, stating that it rarely brings the catharsis that one desires.

Expert tactician: Harley Quinn, while not quite on par in this regard with her ex-boyfriend Joker, is nonetheless highly skilled with improvising criminal activities, managing to trap and murder Batman's protegé Robin when she was still an adolescent (though she notably had the assistance of Joker in this), to suggest a feasible escape option to Deadshot and Captain Boomerang, and to swiftly improvise a plan to weaken and take down the fearsome and powerful Enchantress in her adulthood. Following her emancipation, she single-handedly destroyed Ace Chemicals (while intoxicated) and she later had Black Mask meet her in familiar territory to hand over Cassandra Cain, knowing she would have weapons in the facility in case the deal went awry.

Expert Deceiver: Harley Quinn is a highly skilled deceiver, thus when Deadshot pretended to shoot at her, she convincingly pretended to have been killed only to reveal that she is still alive and later on, managing to trick Enchantress into thinking that she was about to swear allegiance to the latter, and to subsequently use that distraction to suddenly cut open Enchantress's chest with Katana's sword, exposing and pulling out the supervillain's vulnerable heart. Her proficiency in lying allowed her to recognize Cassandra Cain's own lies regarding the whereabouts of the Bertinelli Diamond, pointing out the inflection in her voice and the way she could not maintain eye contact.

Expert Escapologist: During her skirmish with Renee Montoya, Quinn was able to uncuff herself from Montoya and handcuff Montoya with the former only realizing afterward.

Pathological Indomitable Will: Harley Quinn (much like the Joker) possesses an obliviousness to danger that makes her invulnerable to fear and intimidation, which are usually Batman's greatest weapons in combat. Unlike Joker, however, Harley does seem to fear death, as she was dismayed by the Jokermobile crashing into a river, due to her inability to swim at the time.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.

Abandonment -

When she was a little girl, her daddy traded her for a six-pack of beer. He was a dysfunctional drunkard and dysfunction and displacement have been a focal point of her life since her formative years. No matter how many times he tried to ditch her, and the responsibility there-in, she kept coming back and so he sent her to an orphanage called St. Bernadettes that was largely staffed by nuns and functioned as a parochial preperotary school in its curriculum and structure. That structure proved to be too rigid for Harley, who stayed in trouble with the good sisters there and under their watchful eye until finally she bludgeoned one of them with an oar. (Blunt instruments would later become a favorite of hers when it came to weaponry and utilizing street-based items on the fly.) Despite that set-back, and the clear problem with authority, she went onto excel and succeed against everyone’s expectations in her adolescent years and even won herself a full-ride to Gotham University for her extensive gymnastics training and mind-blowing GPA.

The Joker -

After getting her PHD Harley transferred into Arkham Asylum and started her first year residency there to monitor the Joker, so that she could write a best-seller about serial killers in true crime fashion. Eventually, she was allowed by the senior-most staff to visit the Joker on her own and have full access to him in her quest for material. The Joker planted seeds of discord, doubt, and maintained this manipulation by further sowing them during their sessions.

He used the false pretenses of possibly curing him to make her fall in love with him and with those walls down the Joker was able to convince Harley to smuggle a machine gun into Arkham to help his escape. Before fleeing, the Joker cranked the shock therapy machine up well past the recommended settings and used it on Harley. The end result fractured her psychologically, and caused permanent damage and trauma. It created an instability and imbalance in her amygdala. With this damage and the additional damage to her cerebral cortex Harley was an easy target for the Joker to continue to marionette and eager to please, she went right along with his demands, no matter how deranged. She proved her worth by taking the high dive into a vat of chemicals at Ace Chemicals where their torrid love affair truly began. The exposure to them and the cerebral hypoxia created further psychological damage and disorder.

The artist formerly known as Harleen Quinzel became Harley Quinn: The Clown Queen of Crime. She and the Joker became the reigning Bonnie and Clyde duo of Gotham and sank their fingers into as much creative chaos as they could manage. Her need to make him happy kept her alive, and the Joker - less dedicated in his affections, used that to his advantage and made Harley into a pawn. Something she didn’t come to realize until much later, after multiple break ups, abuse at his hands, and a lot of emotional and mental trauma.

“A Harlequin’s role is to serve. An audience. A master. A harlequin’s nothing without a master, and no one gives two fucks who we are beyond that.”

Following the explosive ending of her violent romance with Mr. J, Harley has to reconcile with her own self-worth in his absence and the reality that where love, friendship, and romance is concerned she has never known another person to ever truly rely on. Her own feelings about herself and her choices are something she has to sort through and she doesn’t get a whole lot of time to process before she’s thrown into the next big thing. A debt owed, and a whole city of pissed off fiends chomping at the bit to get their hands around her throat.

“Recently, I made a promise to myself that the next time I got a boyfriend, I'd be on the lookout for red flags. And if I saw any, I would do the healthy thing and I would murder him. And killing kids? Kind of a red flag.”

With a little time, effort, and the inconvenient capture at the hands of Amanda Waller and induction back into the Suicide Squad gave her that time. Harley Quinn is more actualized because of what she’s gone through, and uses it to her advantage. She lets people under-estimate her, she allows people to try and manipulate her, all toward a much more respectable end-goal. She’s a lot of things, but one thing she’s not is easily defined. Proof of the grow through what you go through self-help methodology.

“Number one, no one is like me. If you wanted to even come close, you would have to go to medical school. Become a psychiatrist, work in an asylum. Fall in love with your patient, break said patient out of said asylum. Begin a life of crime. Jump into a vat of chemicals to prove yourself to a madman. Get arrested by the Batman. Go back to jail, get out of jail with a bomb in your neck. Save the world, go back to jail, and break out of jail before breaking up with the aforementioned madman and going out on your own.”

The good, the bad, the ugly all make up who she is and who she is happens to be Harley Quinn, and she takes that name back and everything along with it. Being the master of her fate and the director of her own destiny has given her a new lease on life, and a better understanding of herself.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
Chaotic Neutral -

In Gotham City, things don’t come easy for anyone, not unless you’re lucky enough to be a Wayne and even they had a dark dance with fate in the end. To get by, to live without any additional baggage a person needs to have three things: Street smarts, strength, and the ability to know when and where to be Switzerland. You can survive a lot in Gotham City by just minding your own business, and so Harley focusses on herself in lieu of the many, many enemies she’d collected by being The Joker’s arm candy. She plays things safe, and chooses when and where to exhaust her energy and fight the powers that be. There’s no motivating her, she’s in the cockpit and the pilot of her own life and peer pressure doesn’t pack a punch.

She does have a soft spot for kids, for animals, minorities, and for other ladies looking for a good time in a world trying to keep them down but most of what she does she does in the heat of the moment in a fly by the seat of her pants snappy decision making style. Her own history plays a part in her morality choices, toxic men, red flags, and bad choices but those things all have to culminate to get her to really be involved and even then, she might waffle. She sees nothing wrong with petty theft, public defacement, violence, or a little arson. Whatever gets the message across and finishes the job fast. That said, once she makes a choice to do something there’s no swaying her or her logic.

What quality or qualities do they admire most?

In the absence of her own self-confidence, Harley can appreciate the weirdness, the quirks and ticks of other people and what makes them different. How it all manifests and becomes a piece of the puzzle is important to her, but given how long she went without it so is loyalty and predictability.

Harley accepts most people for who they are, and knows how to read between the lines to find the diamond in the rough. For example, with Huntress and Dinah Lance. The little songbird with bitching lungs just playing the role, she sees past the obvious and into the heart of the matter. Harley knows how powerful Dinah is and accepts Renee Montoya easily because she can understand her motivations given the rampant misogyny and fans those flames to save all their assess because game recognizes game. Harley, despite her own abysmal self-image sees the good and in-between of others and appreciates it oftentimes more than they do themselves.

People that can fight, and overcome adversity, and the labels and boxes that other people put them into are the best kind of people. It’s people like that, like Killer Croc, Nanaue, and Ratcatcher 2 the self-assured despite their circumstances, that Harley can appreciate the most.

Rick Flagg and his unwavering loyalty even against his better-judgement represent the hole within herself that’s not been filled since her father’s abandonment. Her own self-worth can never let it be recognized for what it is, but she appreciates it all the same and seeks it out subconsciously despite her own reservations.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?

“I'm sorry, kid, I'm just a terrible person I guess.”

This is a loaded question, Harley knows there’s a lot wrong with her and where it all stems from. The self-preservation instinct, the anger issues, and the fly by the seat of her pants decision-making all in part make her an unreliable narrator and a person with a lot of enemies. Enemies that either want vengeance, or payback in the form of having her collect or take the burden on rather than themselves. Especially with Batsy around doing the whole broody, judgemental super-hero thing.

While she’s aware of her flaws, she strives to be better, but selfish self-interest gets the better of her time and time again. She is flighty, unrepentant, and violent and she strives to facilitate those traits to get what she wants and make her own life livable. From roller derby (for the violence), to petty-theft, Harley’s self-interest is always served best by spur of the moment risks taken for high reward.

While she doesn’t see her kleptomania or propensity for violence as a bad thing necessarily she does see her own deceit, selfish interests, and lack of reliability as red flags and does her best to correct them. Sometimes in vain.

“I know what you're thinking. You think I'm a dick after all that. But you heard what the cop said. Sionis is gone. And those guys? They're going to be just fine. Montoya's boss picked up the gangbangers at the Booby Trap. And took all the credit while he was at it. Again. It was the kick in the balls she needed to see that she had nothing to prove to those blowhard assholes. She quit the same day. We got the secret bank codes off the diamond. And Huntress got her family money back. She's using it to fund a little crime-fighting outfit. They call themselves the Birds of Prey. I call them dorky little do-gooders. The rock itself was worth a chunk of change, so I pawned it. And I invested the cash in a little startup making waves in the East End. Oh! And I found Bruce. He was wandering around Chinatown. I guess it proves the theory that hyenas really do have nine lives. Yeah. Yeah. I made the kid my apprentice. Call me a softy… I dare you.”

While she’s not looking to be a paragon of humanity she does have her own moralistic limits, like trying to sell Cassandra Cain instead of taking the time necessary to help her pass the rock. Actively communicating with herself helps with that, but Harley’s never gonna be the kind of person you know is beyond reproach. She knows she’s damaged goods, and rolls with that.

What is their sign, and why?

Wheel of Fortune: Life has taught Harley to hit the ground running and always be willing to improvise. She uses not only circumstances and situational happenstance to her advantage, but also people. She lets people underestimate her and plays the odds when they don’t. She is constantly scheming, stealing, and mixing up a little mayhem for her own benefit. Life’s a gamble, and she’s a royal flush.
